SafeWork has released a self-assessment tool and quick reference guide to help officers better understand and apply their WHS due diligence obligations. The resources are designed to identify knowledge gaps and support practical improvement in day-to-day safety leadership.
The new self-assessment tool is intended to help officers assess their understanding of due diligence and identify areas where further improvement may be needed. After completing it, users receive a personalised report with ratings and suggested improvement actions.
SafeWork has also published a quick reference guide covering the basics of due diligence, including who may be considered an officer, officers' duties and practical steps that can support compliance.
Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011, officers have a legal obligation to exercise due diligence to ensure their businesses meet WHS obligations. SafeWork says this includes understanding workplace risks, ensuring appropriate resources and processes are in place, and verifying that controls are working in practice.
SafeWork Commissioner Janet Schorer said industry feedback showed some officers found due diligence difficult to apply in their everyday leadership roles. She described due diligence as an ongoing duty and encouraged officers to use the new resources to strengthen their understanding and safety leadership.
The release introduces practical support material rather than a new WHS duty. For business owners, directors and other officers, the tools provide a structured way to review their understanding of existing due diligence obligations.
